'The Blue Bird' is a charming fairy play by the Belgian playwright and poet Maurice Maeterlinck. The story follows a sister and brother, Mytyl and Tyltyl, as they try to seek happiness. On their journey they are aided by the good fairy Berylune.This was an immensely popular play, this copy being the thirty-second edition, published in October 1912. The first English edition was published in March 1909, rapidly going through at least thirty-two editions before the end of 1912.Illustrated with a tipped-in colour frontispiece, and twenty-four tipped-in colour plates.Collated, complete.Translated here into English by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos.Illustrated by Frederick Cayley Robinson. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart, with some minor marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) was a Belgian playwright and essayist, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. His other works include 'The Intelligence of Flowers', 'The Life of the Ant' and 'The Life of Space&apos. He also published 'The Life of Termites' in 1926, but this has been accused of being plagiarised from 'The Soul of the White Ant' by Eugene Marais.This work has particular emphasis on the social life of the honeybee. It has been converted into a work for children, functioning as a work on nature.With marvellous full colour plates by Edward J. Detmold. In a very scarce and extraordinarily preserved dust wrapper.
