Edition originale, rare, illustrée d'un titre-frontispice et de 22 planches d'après les tableaux d'Eustache Le Sueur et gravées par François Chauveau. Légendes des gravures sur deux colonnes, un verset en latin, et sa traduction en regard. Brunet III, 1020. Reliure en demi chagrin chocolat glacé ca 1860 à coins signée L. Fixon en bas du dernier feuillet. Dos à nerfs janséniste. Titre gravé, ainsi que les initiales S. D. Accrocs avec manques sur le plat inférieur. Estafilade à un coin du plat inférieur et coin émoussé. Quelques frottements. Bel exemplaire, bien frais. Le Sueur peignit entre 1645 et 1648 le cyle de la vie de Saint bruno, un ensemble de 22 toiles qui lui furent commandées pour orner le cloître de la chartreuse de Paris. Le Sueur y affirme son style propre hérité du classicisme de Poussin et de son maître Simon Vouet. Ces toiles furent plus tard achetées par Louis XVI en 1776. Elles sont désormais au Louvre. François Chauveau est l'un des plus illustres graveurs français du XVIIe, et l'un des 4 graveurs cités par Charles Perrault dans ses Hommes illustres, et l'un des principaux représentants de la technique de l'eau-forte. Dans son Voyage pittoresque de Paris, Dezallier D'Argenville décrit ainsi le cloître de la Chartreuse : ""Le petit cloître mérite une attention particulière. Le Raphaël français Eustache Le Sueur y a représenté en vingt-deux tableaux peints sur bois les principales circonstances de la vie de S. Bruno [...] Ce cloître a été gravé par François Chauveau d'une manière qui rend assez bien le caractère de Le Sueur."" - Chez René Cousinet, à Paris s.d.
