Kwasi Kwarteng, Ghosts of Empire: Britain&Apos;S Legacies in the Modern World
Kwasi Kwarteng
Ghosts of Empire: Britain&Apos;S Legacies in the Modern World
London, Bloomsbury, 2011. First edition. Cloth. Kwasi Kwarteng considers the reverberations of the British Empire in this first edition. A fine copy A fine copy of Kwasi Kwarteng's monograph on the British Empire, found in the original unclipped dust wrapper. With chapters on Iraq, Kashmir, Burma, Sudan, Nigeria, and Hong Kong, Kwarteng discusses how the continuing reverberations of the British Empire, and how the legacies of the empire have haunted these nations through war. Through his analysis of the oversights, accidents, and uncertain pragmatism that led to the decline of the empire, Kwarteng argues that the British Empire was not formed by a coherent policy. Kwarteng served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Liz Truss for thirty eight days in 2022 before he was dismissed after his mini-budget caused sterling to drop. He is the MP for Spelthorne in northern Surrey, and has a PhD in History from Cambridge. In the publisher's original red cloth binding, in its unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, lovely. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages throughout. As New . Ill.: Not stated. As New/Fine.

Wiredu, Kwasi
Cultural Universals and Particulars : An African Perspective
Bloomington [IN], Indiana University Press, (1996). orig.wrappers. 23x15cm, 237 pp. PAPERBACK.. ISBN: 0253210801. Minor rubbing. VG.
¶ Ghanaian philosopher Kwasi Wiredu confronts the paradox that while Western cultures recoil from claims of universality, previously colonized peoples, seeking to redefine their identities, insist on cultural particularities. Wiredu asserts that universals, rightly conceived on the basis of our common biological identity, are not incompatible with cultural particularities and, in fact, are what make intercultural communication possible. Drawing on aspects of Akan thought that appear to diverge from Western conceptions in the areas of ethics and metaphysics, Wiredu calls for a just reappraisal of these disparities, free of thought patterns corrupted by a colonial mentality. Wiredu's exposition of the principles of African traditional philosophy is not purely theoretical; he shows how certain aspects of African political thought may be applied to the practical resolution of some of Africa's most pressing problems" - publisher's description.
