(COULIANO, Ioan Petru)
Lucrari Stiintifice: Cercurile Studentesti de Folclor
Baia Mare. Romania, N.p. 1973. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff green wrappers. 135pp. Foldout chart, music notations. Very good. Outer wrappers (only) a tad edgeworn and lightly soiled, a bit rough at spine head and tail, else tight and internally near fine. This obscure, rather homespun, bibliographically-challenged Romanian publication of student folklore studies (entirely in Romanian) may well represent the first appearance in print of famed, murdered Roman historian/philosopher Ioan Petru Couliano, at this time 23 years old -- and is Couliano's personal copy as well. Couliano (or Culiano; 1950-91) was a controversial Romanian philosopher, essayist and historian of ideas, religion and culture; in May 21, 1991, he was murdered -- some say assassinated -- in a bathroom at the University of Chicago's Divinity School, likely because he proved a vocal critic of Romania's Communist post-Revolution regime in interviews and articles. His sloppy, scrawled ownership signature appears on the title page, and his contribution to this issue ("Soarele Si Luna: Eseu asupra semnificatiei simbolicii hierocosmice soare -- luna si a nuntilor mitice") appears on pp. 89-97. He underlines a few sentences and corrects a few minor typographical errors in blue ballpoint. Laid in at the first page of his essay is a photocopy of two pages from an unidentified German scholarly journal on which Couliano inks a few words. He also underlines in red ballpoint a few sentences in other essays. Interestingly, the byline on his essay gives his affiliation (in Romanian) as "Philology Faculty, University of Bucharest" -- and while Couliano studied at this university, nowhere else is it noted that he taught there as well, perhaps an extremely short sojourn. Several higher learning institutions are located in this northern Romanian city, but the source of this journal is not cited.  . .

Davies, Ioan
Writers in Prison
Oxford, Basil Blackwell, 1990. orig.wrappers. 23x15cm, xiv,273 pp. PAPERBACK.. ISBN: 0631168311. Minor rubbing. VG.
¶ Solzhenitsyn, Rosa Luxembourg, Boethius, Bunyan, Gramsci, Genet, Osip and Nadezha Mandlestam, Breyten Breytenbach, the Rosenbergs, Dostoievski: all of these authors wrote at times, and frequently for sustained periods, within conditions of enforced incarceration. Writers in Prison is an enthralling study of writers who are sent to prison, of prisoners who become writers, and of the metaphors drawn from prison which influence our conceptions of everyday life. Ranging widely across history, Ioan Davies charts the individual's impulse to survive through texts, through song, and through reclaiming his or her own voice against the imposition of other voices and other texts" - publisher's description. Contents: Prison Writing: Margin & Centre; Framing the Subject; The Consolidation of Philsophy; Violent Space; Narratives: Text / Anti-text; Underground Man / Hollow Man / The Time of the Hero; Riven Situations; Death Row; Final Solutions; Conclusion: Inscribing the Everyday.
