HUGO, Victor.
Bug-Jargal.
Paris, J. Hetzel & Cie, 1876. 8vo. Original illustrated wrappers (spine dam.). With 22 woodengravings after Beaucé et Riou by Pannemaker. 84 pp. First published in Paris in 1826. - The story of Bug-Jargal, the mystical leader of the slaves, begins several weeks before the Haitian Revolution, when Toussaint Louverture fights the colonial regime. D'Auverney, the nephew of a landed aristocrat with many slaves, is betrothed to Marie, his cousin. A slave, Pierrot, falls in love with Marie, but can not do anything because of the obvious racial and cultural barriers between them. The novel follows the tumultuous early years of the Haitian Revolution. It is one of the most important works of nineteenth-century colonial fiction, and quite possibly the most sustained novelistic treatment of the Haitian Revolution by a major European author. - (Stained). Cf. Sabin 33613-33615.

Bug-Jargal; le Dernier Jour D&Apos;Un Condamnãƒâ©; Claude Gueux
Paris , Nelson, Editeurs , [1912]. Leather. Three fictional works by the famous author Victor Hugo in the original French, in a smart prize binding. This edition comprises three mid-nineteenth century stories by Victor Hugo in the original French. Dated from Jisc 1912. Bug-Jargal follows a friendship between enslaved African prince and a French military officer during the Haitian Revolution. Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné constitutes a political plea for the abolition of death penalty. Claude Gueux is a short story, considered to be an early example of 'true crime' fiction. Sharing Hugo's thoughts on injustice, which are explored later in more depth in Les Miserables. It was considered a great educational work, so much so that the editor of Revue de Paris arranged for copies to be sent to all deputies of France. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece. With half titles to each story. In a smart full calf prize binding, second prize awarded to C L H Tolley in 1914 for Classics.  In a full calf school prize binding, with new marbled endpapers. Externally generally smart with minor shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the boards and spine. The front hinges are slightly strained, holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. With a light foxing affecting the endpapers slightly, otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .

Paris , Alphonse Lemerre, Editeur , c1900. Leather. A beautifully bound set of works from the leading figure of the Romantic literary movement, Victor Hugo. A pleasing set of six volumes from a series of the works of Victor Hugo, a French Romantic writer and politician who wrote in a broad range of genres and forms across his lifetime. Most of these works contain his poetry, some of which offer insight to his personal life, political views and the significant historical events of the period. Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco, with lovely gilt decorated spines and marbled boards. Two works are dated (Le Pape 1888 and Bug Jargal 1912). This set contains the following of his works:Le Pape - La Pitie Supreme Religions et Religion - L'ane - This volume has three works in one, including the closet drama that supports Christianity but attacks the rigid organisation of the Catholic Church (Le Pape) and two long poems revolving around God's permission of the French Revolution as well as general religion and philosophy. Chansons des Rues et des Bois - A collection of poems, originally published in 1865 in Belgium where he was in exile.L'Annee Terrible - A series of poems dealing with the Franco-Prussian War, the trauma of losing his son Charles, and with the Paris Commune. L'Art d'etre Grand-Pere - Among the last of the poetry Hugo wrote, describing the experience of becoming the sole guardian to his grandchildren after the death of his son and his son's wife. Les Chatiments - This poetical collection fiercely attacks Napoleon III's Second Empire, with sympathies laid for the working classes. Bug-Jargal - One of Hugo's novels, originally published in 1826, it follows a friendship between an enslaved African prince and a French military officer during the early years of the Haitian Revolution. Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco with decorative gilt to the spines. Externally, very smart, with light fading to the spines and rubbing to the extremities only.
