A pleasing set of six volumes from a series of the works of Victor Hugo, a French Romantic writer and politician who wrote in a broad range of genres and forms across his lifetime. Most of these works contain his poetry, some of which offer insight to his personal life, political views and the significant historical events of the period. Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco, with lovely gilt decorated spines and marbled boards.Two works are dated (Le Pape 1888 and Bug Jargal 1912). This set contains the following of his works:Le Pape - La Pitie Supreme Religions et Religion - L'ane - This volume has three works in one, including the closet drama that supports Christianity but attacks the rigid organisation of the Catholic Church (Le Pape) and two long poems revolving around God's permission of the French Revolution as well as general religion and philosophy. Chansons des Rues et des Bois - A collection of poems, originally published in 1865 in Belgium where he was in exile.L'Annee Terrible - A series of poems dealing with the Franco-Prussian War, the trauma of losing his son Charles, and with the Paris Commune. L'Art d'etre Grand-Pere - Among the last of the poetry Hugo wrote, describing the experience of becoming the sole guardian to his grandchildren after the death of his son and his son's wife. Les Chatiments - This poetical collection fiercely attacks Napoleon III's Second Empire, with sympathies laid for the working classes. Bug-Jargal - One of Hugo's novels, originally published in 1826, it follows a friendship between an enslaved African prince and a French military officer during the early years of the Haitian Revolution. Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco with decorative gilt to the spines. Externally, very smart, with light fading to the spines and rubbing to the extremities only.
