Gray, Mr. [Thomas]
Poems by Mr. Gray, a New Edition
London, Printed for J. Murray, 1790. A New Edition. Hardcover. Size: 16mo 6" - 7" tall. A perfectly serviceable reference copy of a stated New Edition of the poetry of "Mr. Gray," Thomas Gray (1716-1771). Nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Bound in light gray paper over boards, moderately soiled and worn, brown paper over spine, worn at spine head and foot, title penned to spine head. Likely a rebound edition insofar as original front and rear wraps appear to be missing, thus the entirety having been bound in. Collated thus: Advertisement to this Edition; a short biography, the Last Will and Testament of Mr. Gray, Tears of Genius, an Ode, Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat, drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes," and plentiful additional poems. Two fine duotone engraved plates, quite fine. Moderate foxing throughout, but generally clean and bright. His Wikipedia entry notes that Thomas Gray "was an English poet, letter-writer, classical scholar, and fellow at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He is widely known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, published in 1751" and that he only published 13 poems in his lifetime.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . London, Riccardi Press for Eton College, 1946. Vellum. A nice privately printed edition of the poetical works of the Romantic Thomas Gray, printed for Eton, from the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Privately printed by Riccardi Press for Eton College, with an Eton presentation leaf before the half-title.In the original scarce glassine wrap.A collection of the poetry of Thomas Gray.Gray is best known for his poem 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard&apos. However he was an incredibly self-critical poet, and only published thirteen poems during his life. Gray was offered the position of Poet Laureate, but turned it down. He is considered to be pre-Romantic.From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, from her library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. After being widowed at 25, Audrey married the fabulously wealthy American department store heir, Marshall Field III, later divorcing him and marrying the Honorable Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. In 1940 she bought Julians Park and redesigned the interior. Her library was impressive, with many examples of her own bookbinding.Audrey was an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty, the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII (though she was also rumoured to be his daughter, or the lover of King Edward VIII), featured in the 'Book of Beauty' by Cecil Beaton. She had many high profile friends, such as Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel, Fred Astaire, and Nancy Mitford, a sparkling hostess of the Edwardian period, her hedonistic antics bringing her into the Bright Young Things. In a full vellum binding, with the original glassine wrap. Externally, smart. A few minor marks to the boards, as is usual with vellum. Boards have sprung a little.
