GRAY (Thomas):
The Poems of Mr. Gray. To which are added Memoirs of his Life and Writings by W. Mason.
York: Printed by A. Ward; and sold by J. Dodsley...; T. Cadell...; and J. Todd..., 1778. 4 volumes. 8vo, pp. [iv], 168 [169 Contents, 170 blank]; xv [xvi blank], 161 [162 blank]; xii, 166; xiv, 239 [240 blank], contemporary calf, gilt spines, morocco labels; no portrait in volume 1, two blank leaves, title-page and three following leaves wormed in volume 2 (slightly affecting "m" and "s" in "Poems"), tops and bases of spines chipped, joints a little fragile, but a decent set. Mason published the first collected edition of Gray's poems in 1775, four years after the poet's death in 1771. He included a number of poems that Gray had chosen not to print, and his biographical method, using Gray's letters to form a narrative, was innovative. Mason's memoirs of Gray's life have some utilitarian value, but later scholars have not forgiven him for falsifying some of the letters and destroying the originals.

GRAY (Thomas). MASON (William), editor:
The Poems of Mr. Gray. To which are prefixed Memoirs of his Life and Writings by W. Mason, M. A.
York: Printed by A. Ward; and sold by J. Dodsley..., London..., 1775. FIRST COLLECTED COMPLETE EDITION. 4to, 266 x 205 mms., pp. [iv], 416, 111 [112 Contents, 113 Errata, 114 - 116 blank], engraved portrait (by James Basire after B. Wilson, contemporary diced calf, gilt spine, black leather label; lower portion of boards damp-stained, affecting lower corner of first five leads, joints cracked, corners worn. A serviceable copy, with the contemporary armorial bookplate of Charles Legh Hoskins Master on the front paste-down end-paper and an appreciative note on the verso of the front free marbled end-paper, but probably in a later hand and not that of Hoskins Master. In his last years, Gray (1716 - 1771) was Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, though he never gave an inaugural lecture. One of his last compositions, published in 1769, was an ode performed at the installation of His Grace Augustus-Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Grafton, Chancellor of the University; this was set to music by the Professor of Music, Dr. John Randal, and included here in the poems, which comprise the shorter part of the volume. Mason included in the volume poems that Gray had not intended to print. Mason composed the memoirs by quoting from selected letters, linked by some narrative, a form of biography that he seems to have inaugurated, or at least made popular.

GRAY Thomas
Poems of Thomas Gray. With Watercolour Illustrations by William Blake. [Commentary by Irene Tayler]. 1000 COPIES WERE PRINTED
Folio Society,, [2013]. 2 vols., 8vo., First Edition thus, with a portrait frontispiece and 116 fine watercolour plates in facsimile; pictorial cloth, morocco back, upper board and backstrip lettered in gilt, Commentary Volume in brown cloth, gilt back, the two volumes housed in publisher's buckram solander case lettered in gilt, a fine set. EDITION LIMTED TO 1000 SETS. This splendid FS production reproduces the original watercolours, acquired by Paul Mellon in 1966 and now in the Paul Mellon Collection at the Yale Center for British Art. A number of scholars have written about this work, but Irene Tayler’s 1971 book, Blake’s Illustrations to the Poems of Gray, remains the most comprehensive and compelling reading. Presented here as a separate commentary volume, Tayler’s account tells how the illustrations were produced, relates Blake’s interpretation of the poems to his own ideas, and provides a detailed commentary on each poem.
