Acht jaar lang (2006-2014) had fotograaf Hans Wilschut een kamer in het vijfsterrenhotel Manhattan in hartje Rotterdam. Vanuit deze ruimte op de 12e verdieping keek hij dag en nacht uit op het Stationsplein. Daar zag geen moment er hetzelfde uit. Reden er de ene dag tientallen vrachtwagens met zand af en aan, de volgende dag kon het plein er stil en verlaten bij liggen. Striemde soms de regen tegen de zonwerende ruiten van zijn kamer, een uur later baadde het plein in het schelle zonlicht.Toen de fotograaf zijn project startte, stond er nog het oude station van Van Ravesteyn. Na het 'traan laten' en de onvermijdelijke maar niet minder dramatische sloop verschijnen er plots nieuwe - tijdelijke - gebouwen in beeld. Een stel silo's om stikstof in op te slaan, een 'kroepoek' om onder te schuilen voor de reizigers. De details zijn fascinerend. De 4 bij 5 inch metende opnames van Wilschut lijken onherroepelijk en definitief, maar zijn zo tijdelijk als een dag, een week, een maand.De teksten zijn geschreven door journalist en kunstcriticus Edo Dijksterhuis en theater-, televisiemaker en schrijver Wilfried de Jong.
