CRAWHALL, JOSEPH
Border Notes & Mixty-Maxty [with Signed Accompanying Continental Porcelain Ribbon Plate Designed and Painted by Joseph Crawhall II]
Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Andrew Reid [for the author], 1880. Limited Edition [50]. Brown hardback half-leather cover with peacock feather patterned cloth. (More images available on request). 220mm x 180mm (9" x 7"). 142pp. Five hand-coloured plates; numerous additional hand-coloured illustrations; b/w plates and head and tail pieces throughout. The Crawhall family of the North East of England is one of the most ancient of the region. Between the late 18th and mid 19th centuries three members of this family are recognised for their artistry - amongst the most distinctive the region has produced. Joseph Crawhall I (1793 - 1853) was an amateur landscape, animal and figure artist. He became owner of St Anne's Ropery in Newcastle, an affluent member of the Newcastle Society, holding positions of Sheriff and Mayor. Joseph Crawhall II (1821 - 1896) inherited his father's artistic talents and continued the family interest in art, music and angling. His legacy was to reproduce woodcuts and engravings associated with ancient chapbooks and ballad sheets. Thomas Bewick was one of his decisive influences. He went on to produce many books, illustrated by himself. His first (printed by himself in 1859) was entitled 'The Compleatest Angling Booke That Ever was Writ'. The second edition (printed in 1881) contained illustrations from his son, Joseph Crawhall III. Other books include 'Chorographia', 'A Beuk o Newcassell Sangs', 'Izaak Walton: His Wallet Booke' and 'Chaplets from Coquet-side'. Joseph Crawhall II produced the porcelain Ribbon plate catalogued above. Born in Morpeth, Northumberland, Joseph Crawhall III (1861 - 1913) became one of Northumberland's most talented animal and bird painters and a distinguished member of the 'Glasgow Boys'. He was an accomplished illustrator in line drawing as illustrated by the book here catalogued: 'Border Notes & Mixty-Maxty'.. G: in good condition without dust jacket.
