The Short Century. Independence and Liberation Movements in Africa: 1945-1994
Prestel, 2001. Paperback. Pp: 496. For much of Africa the 20th century was overshadowed by the experience of colonial rule, with political independence arriving for most peoples only in the last fifty years. The Short Century is a broad survey of cultural life in Africa from the independence movements through the post-colonial era to the end of apartheid in 1994. Expansive, wide-ranging, and lavishly illustrated, this book studies achievements in all areas of the performing and fine arts, photography, literature, theater, architecture, music, and film. The Short Century includes the works of over 50 artists from the paintings of Mancoba and Sekoto during the fifties, through the drawings and theater projects of William Kentridge up to the installations and video works of Kay Hassan and Oladele A. Bamgboye. The great writers of the continent - Soyinka, Senghor, and Cesaire amongst others -, Africa's filmmakers, architects and musicians, all of whom left their mark on the process of decolonialization, are studied here in depth. Renowned historians and cultural philosophers discuss the background of developments and analyse the ideological strategies employed by Western colonial powers to preserve their grip on African countries and peoples. A chapter on photojournalism supplemented by a detailed chronology of events and political movements presents the main stages of Africa's political history. A comprehensive anthology in the appendix contains some 30 historical documents, such as essays, speeches and political manifestos, shedding light on the key issues of the period. ISBN: 3791323903. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

ACHEBE, CHINUA
Beware Soul Brother
London: Heinemann Educational Books, 1979. Third Edition. Softcover (Perfect Bound). Chinua Achebe was not primarily known as a poet but as a Nigerian novelist, essayist, and critic. He is widely regarded as one of Africa's most influential writers and is often referred to as the "father of modern African literature." Achebe was born on November 16, 1930, in Ogidi, Nigeria, and passed away on March 21, 2013. Achebe's most famous and influential novel is "Things Fall Apart," published in 1958. The novel tells the story of Okonkwo, a respected warrior and leader in an Igbo village in colonial Nigeria. It explores the clash between traditional Igbo values and the encroachment of European colonialism, highlighting the devastating effects of cultural and societal change. In addition to "Things Fall Apart," Achebe wrote several other novels, including "No Longer at Ease" (1960) and "Arrow of God" (1964) , which also depict the complexities of Nigerian society during and after colonial rule. Achebe's writing is characterized by his deep understanding of Nigerian culture and his ability to capture the voices, perspectives, and challenges faced by Africans in the midst of social and political transformation. While Achebe is best known for his novels, he also wrote essays and criticism. One of his notable essays is "An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's Heart of Darkness," in which he critiques Joseph Conrad's famous novella for its portrayal of Africans and its perpetuation of racist stereotypes. Though not primarily known as a poet, Achebe did write some poetry throughout his career. His poetry often reflects similar themes found in his novels and essays, exploring the complexities of Nigerian identity, colonialism, and the tension between tradition and modernity. Some of his poetic works can be found in collections such as "Beware, Soul Brother and Other Poems" (1971) and "Collected Poems" (2004). Chinua Achebe's contributions to literature and his exploration of postcolonial themes have had a profound impact on African and global literature. His works continue to be studied, celebrated, and revered for their powerful storytelling, cultural insights, and exploration of the human experience. ; Xi, 68 pages.
