Two copperplate engraving of the 'St. Antonis Poort' and 'Reguliers Poort' (city gates), in the Dutch city of Amsterdam. Above the cityscape a banner is depicted, containing the title of the print. ca. 1726. Overall size: 163 x 146 mm. Good state. Close cut margin. Some age related discolouration and browning in the bottom left corner. The ink on the verso shines slightly through the paper. Handlaid paper. Both sides contain one print and a small strip of text. These prints were part of the book 'Caspar Commelin, Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, zynde een naukeurige verhandelinge (...), 2nd edition, Amsterdam, Pieter Vlaming, 1726. Four vertical folds. Some brown stains. Prospect in two sheets of the construction that was placed in the Hofvijver the 19th of January 1746. On one plate a general overview of the apparatus, whereas on the second plate, detailed views from the sides. Titled above: 'Verbeeldinge van het gevaart voor de illuminatie en het vuurwerk door zyne excell: den heer baron van Reischach enz. ter voorschreve gelegenheid, den 19 january 1746 in 's Hage gegeven' and in French at bottom: 'Représentation de l'edifice pour l'illumination et le feu d'artifice donnés à La Haye le 19 janvier 1746 par son excell: mr. le baron de Reischach, à l'occasion mentionée ci-devant.' Paper front and back slightly damaged. 2 of the 5 illustrations are missing, among which the christian in his room (christen in zijn kamer).With engraved vignet on title page by Jakob Houbraken after Antonyna Houbraken. 1 unsigned engraving with illustration of the last judgment (het Laatste Oordeel) and two portraits engraved by Jacob Houbraken after Lubienietzki. : Johannes Brandt and Kaspar Brandt. Both with poems of C. Bruin: Dus heeft Graveerkunst on seen schets van Brandt gegeeven, wiens tong en pen ons schonk des grooten Paulus leven. Welsprekendheid en kracht bezielt 's Mans Poezy, en streelt elks geeft door 't zoet dier letterlekkerny. Portrait of Johannes Brandt in volume II loose.The collected poetry of the two sons of the famous historian Gerard brand and his wife Suzanne van Baerle. Casper Brandt (Nieuwkoop 1653- Amsterdam 1696) and Johannes Brandt (Nieuwkoop 1660-Amsterdam 1708). Both were Remonstrant ministers and historians and poets as well. The poems of Caspar published posthumously. Gedrukt op groot papier. Half leer, ruggen met titelschildjes en goudstempeling, papier van platten wat beschadigd. Van de 5 platen ontbreken er 2, waaronder Een christen in zijn kamer. Lit.: NNBW VI, 182. Caspar (Nieuwkoop 1653 - Amsterdam 1696) en Johannes (Nieuwkoop 1660 - Amsterdam 1708) waren de zonen van de beroemde historicus Geeraert Brandt, vooral bekend door zijn 'Historie der Reformatie', 'Het Leven en bedryf van Michiel de Ruiter' en zijn biografie van Vondel. Beiden waren net als hun vader remonstrants predikant, schreven net als hij gedichten en bezaten ook diens grote belangstelling voor historisch onderzoek. Al deze kwalificaties gelden overigens ook voor een derde zoon, Geeraert. Caspars verzamelde gedichten werden na zijn dood uitgegeven in 1701 en herdrukt in 1708, van Johannes verscheen in 1701 een bundel 'Mengeldichten'. Deze uitgave van hun beider gedichten, met die van Caspar in het eerste en die van Johannes in het tweede deel, is door de uitgevers opgedragen aan Adrianus van Kattenburgh, remonstrants hoogleraar in de theologie. Zoals gebruikelijk gaan aan de gedichten van de broers, die hoofdzakelijk bestaan uit gelegenheidspoëzie, een aantal drempelverzen vooraf. Caspar Wistar Hodgson was the founder of The World Book Company, as well as an ardent naturalist and owner of two remarkable estates: Kanyonkrag, in New York, and Sohlohnee ranch, a former Indian rancheria in California's Sierra national forest, about 12 miles from Yosemite. This brochure/ New Year's greeting includes scenes of the Hodgson family and grounds primarily at Kanyonkrag, with two depicting the "Yosemite Rancheria." Uncommon. We find none in the trade or institutionally.
