New York, 1862. First Edition. 0 pp. Disbound. COMPLETE AND ORIGINAL ISSUE. NOT A REPRINT. This RARE historic document shows usual wear to spine where disbound, minor soiling along spine of front and some spotting, mainly to back page and center spine area of most pages. Of literary note is Chp. XV of "No Name" by Wilkie Collins with two illustrations. This issue also features cover illustration by Winslow Homer (the illustration is clean, there is light soiling to some margins) of "Rebels Outside Their Works at Yorktown Reconnoitring with Dark Lanterns." Also by Homer, 1/2 page illustration, "Charge of the First Massachusetts Regiment on a Rebel Rifle Pit Near Yorktown" and full page illustration, "The Union Cavalry and Artillery Starting in Pursuist of the Rebels Up the Yorktown Turnpike." Also in the issue is a remarkable, highly-detailed, full-page map of the war "theatre" in Virginia and center-fold sketch of "Commodore Farragut's Squadron and Captain Porter's Mortar Fleet Enterin the Mississippi River." Both of these are unrelated to Homer. Very Good.

The issue print the continuation of Chapters XIII and XIV of "No Name" by Wilkie Collins with 2 illustrations by John M'Lenan. Cover article on and portrait of Major-General O.M. Mitchell known for his "brilliant exploits in Northern Alabama and Mississippi." Also on cover, illustration of a "Rebel Captain Forcing Negroes to Load Cannon under the Fire of Berdan's Sharp-Shooters" by "Mr. Mead." Also, full-page engraving of New Orleans ".Taken by the Union Forces, April 24, 1862) and on opposing page two illustrations: "Flag-Officer Farragut's Gulf Squadron and Commodore Porter's Mortar Fleet" and "Reconnaisance of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, on the Mississippi, by Gun-Boats from Flag-Officer Farragut's Squadron." In addition, full-page illustration of "The Approaches to New Orleans by Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne" by A. Richardson and another of the Mississippi River from Cairo to the Gulf of Mexico, "showing New Orleans, Memphis, Fort Wright, Island Number Ten, Columbus, etc." Also, 2 illustrations related to the attack on Fort Wright, April 18 1862, showing the federal flotilla descending the Mississippi and the "Reconnaissance of Fort Wright by the Gun-Boats and Mortar Fleet.". The uncommon first Tauchnitz edition of Wilkie Collins's mystery novel, about a woman's quest to restore her and her sister's rightful inheritance. The three volume first Tauchnitz edition, the 'Author's Copyright Edition', with three volumes bound in two. Volume I, and volume II up to page 212 are present in the first volume, and the final half of volume II, and the entirety of volume III, appear in the second volume.Collins's novel was first published in 1862, and was originally serialised in Dickens's 'All the Year Round' magazine.Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz founded his Leipzig publishing firm in 1837 at the age of 20. His specialism was publishing foreign language books, particularly English. He began his firm at a defining period for English literature, as popular authors were producing a wider range of work in differing genres and forms. Tauchnitz built a good reputation with many leading British and American authors which lead him to be the principal publisher of English Language books in continental Europe from 1840 to 1940. With the bookplate of Josceline Grove to the front pastedown of each volume.In signed half calf bindings by Cavenagh of Dublin. In half calf signed bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Fading to back strips, as is common with blue calf. Light fading to head of rear board of volume I. Light rubbing to volume II back strip head. Front hinge of volume I a touch strained, but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with instances of significant spotting throughout, most concentrated to first and last few leaves of each volume. Further spotting and instances of foxing to page perimeters.
