Good condition plus. Bensley, 1799. Two volumes sets. Leather bound hardcover(front cover of vol I has been detached but present, some rubbing, small dents and nicks on the covers and spines, two small tears on the edges of the spines, gilt lettering and illustrations to the spines, outer hinges of the front and back covers for vol II slightly loose) in good condition plus. Illustrated with b/w plates including a folded plate by Hogarth plus 24 woodcuts by Nesbit. Clean pages with some ink marks, aged and tainted on the outer edges, some foxing marks, creases, nicks and some shelf wear on the edges of the pages, previous owner's name and date written on the edges of the titles pages, engraved armorial book plate inside the front cover of both books. The books are in GC for its age with some shelf wear. 954pp including The Author's life, preface, indexes. A collectable two volume set. Heavy books (approx. 1. 7 Kg). Good.

Number ninety of eight-hundred copies of this work produced.Illustrated with eight plates. Collated, complete.This work includes seven essays, a selection of previously unpublished papers from the six volumes of manuscript left by Butler at his death. With a preface and bio-bibliographical statement by A.T. Bartholomew. With the pencil inscription of British writer and architectural conservationist Billa Harrod to the front free endpaper. Harrod married economist Sir Roy Harrod, though in the early 1930s was briefly engaged to poet Sir John Betjeman. A former owner has written 'Betjeman's friend + 'almost'' to the front free endpaper, below her inscription. In the publisher's original calf backed paper covered boards. Light rubbing to spine head and tail and joints, with boards exceptionally bright. Minor loss of calf to head of front joint. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
