Including a colour frontispiece plate and many in-text illustrations. The work is affixed with two other works entitled Cudjo's Cave and The Three Scouts, making for a fine and broad example of Victorian children's literature. In half-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally, sound. There is significant wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrip, with cracking to joints, lifting and loss to backstrip and prominent tenderness to hinges, resulting in detached but present endpages. Internally, there is tenderness to the binding throughout, though the pages are largely holding firm. Samuel Orchart Beeton (2 March 1831–6 June 1877) was an English publisher, best known as the husband of Mrs Beeton and publisher of Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management. Beeton launched The English Woman's Domestic Magazine, a pioneering serial for middle-class women, in 1852. His Boy's Own Magazine, published in the UK from 1855 to 1890, was the first magazine for boys. Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management was published in 1861. Beeton followed it with a series of other self-help textbooks, including Beeton's Book of Needlework, Beeton's Dictionary of Geography, Beeton's Book of Birds, and Beeton's Book of Anecdote, Wit and Humour. His company was most famous for the Book of Household Management, written by his wife Isabella Beeton, however his work on garden management, most likely compiled and edited by him, was very popular.
