ABRAMOV, Fyodor
The Dodgers: [Vokrug Da Okolo] Translated by David Floyd.
London, Flegon Press in association with Anthony Blond, 1963. 8vo. in original unclipped dust-wrapper with design by T. O. Elmer. 174 pp. In good condiiton, clean and tight. Dust-wrapper with usual rubbing and very mild chipping to edges. Flegon/Blond publication of this semi-fictional essay (also known as Round and About) was a landmark in Abramov's career, as it caused him to be virtually barred from publication for five years. It describes the life of workers in a poorly administered collective farm". Cornwall, 74. This appears to be the only example of collaboration between notorious publisher Alec Flegon and Anthony Blond ""the last of the eponymous Jewish publishers whose chutzpah made publishing hum in the days before the conglomerates" (Michael Barber).

ABRAMOV, FYODOR, Evergreen Review No. 30 May-June 1963
ABRAMOV, FYODOR
Evergreen Review No. 30 May-June 1963
Evergreen, 1963. First Edition. Softcover (perfect bound). Original illustrated wrappers. With corrugated subscription leaf bound in. With b/w illustrations and adverstisments. Slight wear to spine covers and corners. ; Evergreen Review; Vol. 30; 20.5 x 13.5 x 1.5 cms; 127 pages; In the May–June 1963 issue of Evergreen Review (Vol. 7, No. 30) , Fyodor Abramov’s novella The New Life: A Day on a Collective Farm, translated by George Reavey, presents a vivid and realistic portrayal of Soviet rural life during the Khrushchev era. The narrative focuses on a single day in the life of a northern Russian kolkhoz (collective farm) , offering insight into the routines, interpersonal tensions, and ideological struggles of its workers. Abramov, known for his commitment to truthfully depicting Soviet peasantry, uses this day-in-the-life structure to explore broader themes such as collectivism, the clash between tradition and progress, and the human consequences of political change. His story does not idealise the Soviet system but instead offers a critical yet compassionate look at the lives of ordinary villagers navigating its realities. The New Life stands as both a literary and sociological document—an empathetic, grounded exploration of the impact of agricultural policy on rural communities, and a powerful example of Abramov’s literary dedication to rural truth-telling.. Very Good .

Abramov, Fedor
Vokrug Da Okolo
London: Flegon Press, 1963. First edition thus; 6 1/2 x 9 1/2; pp. 29; stapled yellow wraps; mild foxing along margins of covers; small nick to fore-edge of front cover; previous owner's name stamp to corner of front cover and title page; one large b&w illustration; very good condition. Fedor Abramov was a Russian author and literary critic known for his affinity for writing about the hardships of the Russian peasants. His essay "Around the Bush" also centered on the difficult kolkhoz lives. The publisher of the essay, Alec Flegon, was the owner of "Flegon Press" and a controversial figure in the samizdat publishing circles in London in mid-20th century. He was the first to publish Mikhail Bulgakov's 'Heart of a Dog' and Alexander Solzhenitsyn's 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' as well as various versions of Pasternak's 'Doctor Zhivago.' He did not pay royalties to the authors under the pretext of helping them more than enough with just promoting their works. For that he was resented by many immigrants and was sued by Solzhenitsyn for piracy. He was also rumored to have had strong KGB ties as he was most successful smuggling manuscripts, phone directories, etc. from Russia to England. On the other hand, for his affordable editions and hard work, Flegon had numerous admirers and grateful readers. Ill.: 0. 2.
