¶ About 50 years ago, the 'stone age' of lithography and lithographic printing came to an end all over the world. Stone printing was invented in 1798 by German Aloys Senefelder and was an important complement to letterpress printing at the time. Images, first in black and white and later in colour, were much easier to reproduce lithographically than via woodcuts or copper engravings. The 'iconoclasm' that followed was unparalleled in scope and had a huge range of applications - from advertising and religion to journalism and art. The Dutch Lithography Museum in Valkenswaard displays not only all types of lithographic printing, but also the technique that made them possible. Since 2001, the museum has been caring for the preservation of this graphic heritage. It is a musée vivante, a living museum, with many attractions. Lithographers and lithographers give demonstrations and it is even possible to go to work yourself in the museum workshop. This book was published on the occasion of the museum's tenth anniversary.
