Bulmer and Co. in 1794. The first edition of this work written by William Pearce. Dublin: Printed by J. Potts, at Swifts-Head, in Dame-Street; and J. Williams, in Skinner-Row, 1764. 1st edition thus, i.e. first 10 volume edition. Period full brown calf bindings with raised spine bands, maroon title labels in the second compartment, gilt stamped volume number in 3rd compartment. 10 volumes. Title pages printed in red & black. 6 page publisher list begins Vol III. Frontispiece in Volume I, and Volume V [entitled, "First Three Books of the Dunciad"]. 12mo. General wear to bindings, a few joints starting, spine label to Vol IX mostly chipped away, period engraved amorial bookplate of E. L D'Olier (?) to each volume. Overall, Very Good. Pope a prominent 18th C. poet, perhaps best remembered for his satirical work on Dullness, Dunciad. Warburton an author and clergyman, who eventually rose to the rank of Bishop (for Gloucester). Warburton also Pope's literary executor and reputedly encouraged Pope to write the New Dunciad (1743). Somewhat uncommon in the trade is this 18th C edition of Pope's works, e.g. at the time of cataloguing, we see no other copies of this Potts' set on offer.

With a life of the author to volume I by William Roscoe the English historian and abolitionist. The 'New Edition&apos. Collated, complete. Alexander Pope was an 18th century English poet. He is best known for his satirical verse as well as for his translation of Homer. In uniform half morocco bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, smart with small patches of minor rubbing to extremities and to the spines, particularly to the raised bands and to the head and tail. Small patches of rubbing to paper covered boards to all volumes, heavier to volumes III and IV which have suffered small losses at front board. Spines are faded slightly. Bookplates of George Duckworth and his daughter Bridget to the front pastedown of all volumes. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Various. Very Good Indeed .
