Alexander William Macdougall; Mrs Florence Maybrick, The Maybrick Case a Treatise
Alexander William Macdougall; Mrs Florence Maybrick
The Maybrick Case a Treatise
London, Balliere Tindall and Cox, 1891. First edition. Cloth. A first edition of this work on this famous London murder, which has since been tied into the unsolved Jack the Ripper case. Illustrated with a frontispiece and three plates.A detailed study of this murder case, whereby Florence Maybrick was convicted of murdering her cotton merchant husband James Maybrick by poisoning him. The trial was sensational, and the illustrations to this work replicate chemists labels and letters shown during proceedings. More than a century after his death Maybrick was accused of being Jack the Ripper following the revelation of a diary whereby he confessed. Subsequently this was found to be a hoax. However, one researcher Bruce Robinson believes that Michael Maybrick was the true killer. This copy is ex-library, with a bookplate to the front pastedown of Hammersmith Public Libraries. The first edition of this work on the murder trial of James Maybrick. An uncommon work. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of spine. Split to the cloth at the front joint with the hinge tender. Ex library plate to the front pastedown. Front endpaper has been removed. Internally, binding is tender and has split at page 192. Pages are bright occasional light spots. Good Only . Ill.: Not Stated. Good Only .
