MAN OF ARMOUR - A study of Lieut.-General Vyvyan Pope and the development of armoured warfare.

North Staffordshire Regiment and served in Ireland, at the outbreak of WW1 his batallion was sent to the Western Front, he took part in the Christmas Truce of 1914 and won an MC at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in 1915 and a DSO for his actions at Wulverghem during gas attacks, in March 1918 near Saint Quentin he received a bullet wound in his right elbow which developed gas gangrene and his right arm had to be amputated. By the time he was released from hospital the armistice had been declared. After a short spell with the 2nd batallion he transferred in 1920 to the Royal Tank Corps. He served in an armoured car company in Ireland and briefly commanded one in Egypt in 1922, attending the Staff College Camberley in 1924/5, after spells as brigade major of the Royal Tank Corps Centre at Bovington, on the General Staff and at the War Office he attended the Imperial Defence College in 1934. In 1935 he was posted to command the Royal Tank Corps in Egypt where he learned a lot about operating mechanised armour in the desert. At the outbreak of WW2 he became Chief of Staff II Corps which went to France with BEF. He returned to England December 1939 to command 3rd Armoured Brigade. In April 1940 he was appointed Inspector of Royal Armoured Corps and posted as advisor on AFVs to Lord Gort and shortly aafterwards was evacuated at Dunkirk. He returned to the War Office and was appointed Director of Armoured Fighting Vehicles and initiated production of the Churchill tank. In August 1941 he was appointed GOC XXX Corps. In September he flew to Egypt and assembled a staff but en route to Cunningham's first conference his Hudson ran into trouble taking off from Heliopolis.
