Title: A Letter to J. & D.K. Stewart, Regarding the Export and Sales of Tobacco and Cotton
Description: Liverpool, By the authors, 1839. Document, both printed and in manuscript; 10 3/4 x 8 3/4; pp. [4]; intersecting crease lines with minor punctures to paper; a few closed cuts to edges; in about very good condition. Brothers John Stewart (1806-1885) and Daniel Kerr Stewart (1809-1889) immigrated to the US in the 1820s from the Isle of Bute in Scotland and together with their uncle Norman Stewart set themselves up as tobacco merchants in Richmond, Virginia. Gaining quick success, they would later invest heavily in municipal bonds and in several railroads throughout the South. The brothers would support the creation of the historic Episcopal Emmanuel Church at Brook Hill, which would be used as a hospital during the Civil War. Very good .
