Title: At Home with the Last Democratic President of Central Europe
Description: New York, Authenticated News, 1939. Gelatin silver press photo, n. d. (between 1938 and 1940); 10 x 6 3/4; typed paper tag, agency ink stamp, and penciled-in manuscript note to verso; a small, closed cut to left edge and mild creases to two of the corners; a few glue spots to verso; in about very good condition. An unusual, informal portrait, as opposed to the more common formal photographs available, it depicted Edvard Benes (1884 - 1948) - Czech politician and statesman, leader of the Czech Independence Movement, Foreign Affairs Minister, and President of Czechoslovakia from 1935 to 1938, and again from 1940 to 1948. Dressed in a suit and tie, though with his arms casually crossed, the image was taken at his summer home in Sezimovo Usti, where he "rests from teh burdens of his high office..where Mrs. Benes relieved of her duties as official hostess watches out for his rest and comfort. Very good .
