Title: Programma Germanskoi Rabochei Partii (Program of the German Worker's Party)
Description: Odessa, Knigoizdatelstvo M. S. Kozmana, 1905. First Edition. First Russian edition; 8 x 5 3/4; pp. [3], 6-34, [1]; light-brown wraps, printed in black and illustrated with a large vignette of an eagle holding a feather; a bit of creasing to corners and a few minor spots to margins; in very good condition. A scarce first Russian translation (only two copies at US institutions), it was based on Karl Kautsky's (1854 - 1938) Erfurt Program of 1891 - the official commentary of the Social Democratic Party of Germany - which would become and still is today the seminal text for Orthodox Marxism. The current book would be banned and most copies of it seized by a decree of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1913 (in translation: "Alphabetical index of books and brochures, as well as periodical publications, the seizure of which has been approved by judicial decrees by January 1, 1913," pp. 62; Printing House of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 1913). The publisher, Morei Samuilovich (Meer Shmulevich) Kozman (1877 - 1963), of a Moldovan-Jewish family, briefly owned a bookstore, before opening his publishing house in 1899. During the period of revolutionary upheavals between 1905 and 1907, Kozman would focus on publishing socio-political works by Marx and Engels, Kautsky, Zetkin, etc. Most of them would be subsequently banned by the authorities and seized (as evidenced by the current book). For the reminder of his career he would be forced to print "politically-correct" textbooks, manuals, and so on. Very good .
