Founded in 1862, the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway was one of the so-called Big Four, broad gauge, British-owned railway companies in Argentina in the 19th- and early 20th - centuries. With several branches and extensions in the works, the first train to reach the Atlantic and the main beach city in the country, Mar del Plata, arrived in 1886. By 1910, the enormous number of visitors converging in the summer months would prompt the construction of a second train station in the city - to be utilized only during the tourist season. With the nationalization of the entire Argentine railway network in 1948 the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway would become part of the State-owned Ferrocarriles Argentinos. Very good .
