Description: San Francisco / Louisville / New York / London, California Fig Syrup Co. 1895. First Edition. First edition, n. d. (ca 1895); 6 x 3 1/2; pp. [1], 1-20, [1]; stapled wraps with chromolithographs of Yosemite Valley and of Lake Tahoe; illustrated with monochrome photographs; minor wear and age-toning to margins and edges; in very good condition. The California Fig Syrup Company was founded in Reno, Nevada in 1878 with only one product in their inventory - a quack medicine called the California Fig Syrup - which had nothing to do with figs, but was touted as a cure-all laxative, used to treat "habitual constipation and many ills, depending upon a weak and inactive condition of the liver, kidneys, stomach, and bowels.." The current booklet, published as an advertisement for the Fig Syrup, drew comparisons between the beauty and excellent qualities of life in California and the purity and outstanding virtues of the medicine and described several of California's natural wonders and landmarks, including Yosemite, the Redwood trees, the Old Mission in Santa Barbara, and so on. Very good .
