Vladimir Friche (1870 - 1929) was a renowned historian, editor, art and literary critic, and member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He became active in the Social Democratic Movement in the 1890s, joined the Communist Party in 1917, and headed several literature departments at various institutions. He also founded "Zhurnalist" (Journalist) in 1914 - a magazine, aimed at newsworkers, as he recognized the need for a publication to serve the people of the industry (it celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2004).
