Longman in Paternoster Row, 1729. 8vo. xvi, 243[1]; viii, 115[1]; iv, 110; iv, 52; iv, 33[1]; vi, 21[1]; [2], 15[1]pp. Contemporary full mottled calf gilt, raised bands, decorated compartments, calf gilt spine label, marbled endpapers and leaf edges. Some restoration to joints and board corners; lacks the headband. John Woodward (1665-1728) was an eminent naturalist and geologist. This was his last work; it put forward the view that fossils originated at sea. The oldest geology professorship extant is named after him - the Woodwardian professorship at Cambridge. 'Woodward was the first British author to publish a systematic classification of minerals based on his own observations' DSB. The first volume is divided into two parts; the second volume is divided into five parts, each of which has separate pagination, although the signatures are continuous throughout.
