The volume contains a small collection of poems by Walter Harley, possibly self-published around 1879. Poems are individually dated from 1869-1878. The first poem is a memorial poem to Charles Dickens from 1870 [the year of his death] -- "In Memoriam: Charles Dickens" -- There are two Christmas poems: "Christmas Chimes" and "The Lament of Christmas." There is also an extended ode to "The Girls of England [After Mrs. Felicia Hemans]." -- Felicia Hemans was a [then] well regarded 19th C. English poet -- and a long poem, "The Country Church," lamenting the state of the world at the time, and exhorting humans to love one another. "The Elixir ofLlife" pays tribute to Whelpton's Vegetable Purifying Pills, manufactured in England from 1835 through the early 20th century. 3 other poems complete the collection: Sorrow, Lines Written on the Sea-Shore at Sunset & The Storm. Scarce volume, OCLC records only one institutional holding: UCLA.
