Burton was the Schoolmaster at Lea and Holloway, Derbyshire 1888 -1906. Florence Nightingale's family owned the estate in Lea and her family took a keen interest in the school. The Nightingale family home was built by William Edward Nightingale (1794-1874) on inherited lands in 1825. Florence had grown up at Lea Hurst and she retained a strong connection with the property school, later joining the school board. In particular, she supported Burton's introduction of geology, natural history and gardening in the school studies, hence the subject matter of some of her own books that were given to him by her and so inscribed.
