Cooper, J[ames] Fenimore [1789 - 1851] - The DEERSLAYER: A Tale. In Three Volumes

Title: The DEERSLAYER: A Tale. In Three Volumes
Description: London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, 1841. 1st UK edition (BAL 3895n). The BAL cites published evidence that the Bentley UK edition may, in fact, have precedence over the 1841 US edition issued by Lea & Blanchard. Period tan half-calf bindings with marbled paper boards. Red & black spine labels. Red speckled edges. 3 volumes: viii, 329, [1 (blank)]; [2], 333, [1 (blank)]; [2], 344 pp. 8vo. 7-5/8" x 4-3/4". General extremity wear, with joints rubbed. Snag to Vol III crown leather. Usual foxing. Ex-lib, with small, 4-letter stamp [1/8" x 3/8"] to top of Vol II & III preliminary blank [no other library markings found]. A VG set. "The Deerslayer was Cooper's last novel in his Leatherstocking Tales. Its 1740–1745 time period makes it the first installment chronologically and in the lifetime of the hero of the Leatherstocking tales, Natty Bumppo. The novel's setting on Otsego Lake in central, upstate New York, is the same as that of The Pioneers, the first of the Leatherstocking Tales to be published (1823). The Deerslayer is considered to be the prequel to the rest of the series. Cooper begins his work by relating the astonishing advance of civilization in New York State, which is the setting of four of his five Leatherstocking Tales." [Wiki].
