Description: New York: E. P. Dutton & Company 31 West Twenty - Third Street, (n. d.). Later US Edition (2nd ?), ca 1912. First published in the US by Dutton in 1903. Original publisher's deep maroon cloth binding with gilt stamping. Floral graphic blindstamped to front board. xii, [4], 279, [3] pp. Last leaf blank. Crown 8vo. 8-1/4" x 5-3/8". Square & tight, only light binding wear. Bookplate of Catherine Coffin Phillips. Few spots of foxing to top edge. Withal, a VG+ copy. Gissing's classic tale of one who loved books & reading, and was "an instant success when it appeared in January 1903." [Collie, p. 97]. This edition often mis-identified as the "1st US", no doubt from the publisher statement on the title leaf verso: "First Edition Published in 1903", referring to the earlier Dutton edition, which has "1903" printed on the t.p. and a statement about using the British sheets on the title leaf verso.
