Author: [Menu - San Francisco]. Teschemacher, Henry Frederick [1823 - 1904] - Honoree Title: COMPLIMENTARY DINNER To HON. H. F. TESCHEMACHER. Occidental Hotel, July 21, 1863
Description: San Francisco: Sterett, Printer, 1863. 1st Printing. Now housed in a protective archival mylar sleeve. Single sheet of silk, printed in black, fringe edges. Entire with discrete typographical border. Courses [10, with 60 different dishes, obviously the night a very elaborate affair] printed in ornamental outline type, as well as a section on "Ornaments", apparently those items used to decorate the table, including the obligatory "Ornamental Flower Baskets" & "Coat of Arms of the State of Calfornia". 11-1/4" x 7-5/8" (including fringe). 10" x 6-3/8" (w/o fringe). Fold lines, otherwise a VG+ copy. Teschemacher served as the tenth mayor of San Francisco from October 3, 1859, to June 30, 1863; this dinner no doubt a tribute 'send off' for the departing mayor, who would go on to be a local real estate agent into the 1880s. The Occidental Hotel on Montgomery Street was one of the earliest first-class hotels in the city, and maintained its reputation into the early 1900s, even as its status was eclipsed by the Palace, the St. Francis and the new (1906) Fairmont. Like the others, it burned in the post-quake fire in April of 1906 but was not rebuilt. B. F. Sterett, the printer, was operating in San Francisco as early as 1854, and was still in business as late as the mid-1890s. A rare survivor from the mid-Civil war days of San Francisco.
