Apparently later, though probably still 19th C. maroon cloth binding with gilt stamped title to spine [Forbes indicates the volume published in black cloth]. Floral patterned paper eps. 256 pp. Text double column. 8vo. 7-3/4" x 5-3/8". Modest binding wear. Small discrete po name stamp to t.p. Tipped into the t.p.gutter are two extracted illustations [from elsewhere] of Hawaiian scenes ["The Pali" & "Diamond Head"]. Overall, a solid VG copy. Per Forbes, "An important English-Hawaiian dictionary." The author the Principal of the Lahainaluna Seminary, who spent 5 years compiling the information herein, in which, Hitchcock notes in the preface, "nearly sixteen thousand words have been defined; and over three thousand phrases illustrate the popular use of English and Hawaiian. More than three thousand synonyms give further scope to the Hawaiian in this use of English." Scarce in the trade, with RBH showing the last instance of such as a 1993 bookseller catalogue.
