Cumberland was a civil servant in the Board of Trade and Plantations as well as a prolific playwright thought to have more than fifty plays to his credit. Notoriously self-important and thin-skinned, Cumberland was, in 1779, immortalized by Sheridan as the character Sir Fretful Plagiary in The Critic.
