Age-toning. 2 horizontal fold-lines, with splits starting as fold extremities. Very Good. In 1850, President Millard Fillmore appointed Hall Postmaster General of the United States. He served in this capacity from 1850 through 1852, but for a brief stint as acting Secretary of the Interior. He left the office in 1852, when he became a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. In this letter, Hall appoints Joseph Slocum as mail agent "on the New York and San Francisco line. [where] You will take charge of the mails out on the 11th inst..." Further, in a Post Script, he advises Slocum the "R. R. Companies are hereby requested to pass you free..".
