[4], 116, [2] pp. 11 b/w and color plates, plus b/w and sepia intratextual illustrations. 9-3/8" x 6-1/2". Ex-library with moderate markings to pastedowns only. Gentle wear to extremities; front board very slightly splayed; p.o. bookplate tipped-in to fpd; small pink bookseller label to rpd; slight crimping to corner of one leaf. Interior otherwise clean, bright and crisp. VG+. Norris's first book, a long narrative poem written when he was just a nineteen-year-old student at the University of California. Norris discovered Zola shortly thereafter and turned his attentions to the realist fiction for which he is most well known. This copy with a long local connection, bearing the label of contemporary San Francisco bookseller-publisher William Doxey. Uncommon in the trade.
