"The story in this book is made up of extracts from the 'Life of Mark Twain,' by Albert Bigelow Paine, published by Harper & Brothers. In reading the following remember that Tom Sawyer was Mark Twain (whose real name was Sam Clemens) - Sid Sawyer was Henry Clemens - and Huck Finn was Tom Blankenship." The Kipling piece apparently first published in the New York Herald, 1890 (cf. Richards, C513).
