Tipped-in note & newspaper clipping following p. 229 in v. 1. Laid-in are 2 newspaper clippings, 2 envelopes, one mss poem, one mss receipt & a "R. L. Hale, Carpenter and Jobber" business card. Drawings of Columbus Statue + 2 other figures, v. 2. p. 215, which illustrates the 7 page poem, "On Seeing The Statue of Columbus. "The Three Farraguts", 3 drawings p. 219, v. 2, illustrates the poem, "On See the Farragut Statue." 8-1/4" x 6-3/4". Bindings well worn, with Vol 1 lacking top 2" of spine leather. Some gatherings sprung. Vol 2 with color printed ticket "Fred W. Barry / Manufacturer of Account Books / Boston" to front paste-down. Vol 2 with boards held by cords. A Good set only. Hale the author of the famous California Gold Rush journal, "Log of a Forty-Niner", published in 1923 from a manuscript given to his daughter. Here, in these two commonplace volumes of poetry, Hale treats a number of different subjects & themes, from the Civil War, to labor unrest. In volume 1, he begins Feb. 11, 1862, with "Our Country's Call", concluding, 349 pages later, with "One by One", a lament on the passing of hopes & dreams. Volume 2 begins with a 20 page piece entitled "An Appeal", dated 1889, and concludes with "The Sturdy Old Judge", which Hale notes refers to Judge Andrews of Danvers, Mass "one of our old friends". A unique compilation wherein Hale reflects, via the medium of poetry, on divers aspects of live as experienced in the latter half of the 19th C.
