Text illustrated with numerous cuts. 8vo. 9-1/8" x 5-5/8". Age-toning to wrappers, with spine paper darkened. Diagonal crease to rear wrapper lower corner. Withal, a VG+ copy. Morse a distinguished 19th C naturalist, biologist & [eventually] expert on Japanese culture. During his life, Morse held the positions of Professor of Zoology & Comparative Anatomy at Bowdoin College [1871 - 1874], Professior of Zoology at the Imperial University, Tokyo [1877 - 1880]; and finally, Director of the Peabody Museum [1880 - 1916], serving as Emeritus Director afterwards. Here is offered the very first publication from this noted US scientist, who would go on to publish extensively on divers subjects, ranging from Japanese Homes to Mars.
