Some foxing, yellowed paper.A commemorative poem celebrating the opening of The Hague's theater on April 30th, 1804.The theater was originally built in 1766, when it was intended to become the city residence of Karel Christiaan van Nassau Weilburg and his wife. A French-trained Dutch architect named Pieter de Swart designed a palace in the style of Louis XVI, but the building itself was never finished. Around 1802 the unfinished building was rented by a group of wealthy citizens, who were determined to turn it into a theater. The Nieuwe Haagse Staddschouwburg was brought to completion under the supervision of Johan van Duyshuis, and finally opened its doors in 1804.- Den Haag, poetry, commemoration, theater -
