Description: Allegorical representations on the occasion of the marriage of W.D. Harkema and Y. Pieter Polsma on May 15, 1803.The print contains numerous symbols pointing to faith, love, fertility, the passing of time, luck and misfortune. A young man with a burning torch and an olive branch carries a yoke adorned with flowers and chained to his feet. Next to him stands Faith. She tramples under her feet some figures symbolizing disaster and jealousy. An old man looks up at FatherTime, who is showing a written-down leaf. On the ground, Caritas sits with a lion and a lamb beside her. In the sky a group of putti and two hands holding rings, holding a banner with text about the sacred nature of marriage.On the cartouche held by Father time are names and dates of birth [death, and marriage] of the children the couple had.Signed at bottom with the address of the publisher: Geinventeerd en getekend door H. Gemaakt door Dirk Sluyter (1790-1852) after Haatje Pieters Oosterhuis (1784-1854).De prent bevat tal van symbolen wijzend op het geloof, de liefde, vruchtbaarheid, het verglijden van de tijd, geluk en tegenslag. Een jongeman met een brandende fakkel en een olijftak draagt een met bloemen opgesmukt juk en is aan zijn voeten geketend. Naast hem staat het Geloof. Zij vertrapt onder haar voeten enige figuren die rampspoed en jalousie symboliseren. Een oude man kijkt op naar VadertjeTijd, die een opgeschreven blad toont. Op de grond zit Caritas met naast haar een leeuw en een lam. In de lucht een groep putti en twee handen die ringen vasthouden, met een banier met tekst over de heilige aard van het huwelijk.Op apart blaadje: Haatje Pieters Oosterhuis was tekenaar en etser. De vlam op het hoofd van de kruisdraagsters werd in de de 18e eeuw gebruikt als attribuut van verlichting door het vernunft of door de zuivere godsdienst. Handcolored etching and engraving, with stipple; total: 337 x 248 mm; several damages due to handling of the print. The impression was also pinned to a wall from the four corners; there are traces of sealing wax in various colours on the verso; overall in fair condition.
