Description: Portrait of Paul Rapin de Thoyras, bust to the left, eyes to the front; wearing long curled wig, armour and lace collar; in oval frame on pedestal with coat of arms, writing impliments, armour, and globe.Author of a 'History of England', which was published by the Knapton brothers with enormous success in the 1730s, both in the original French and in English translation. Illustrations were commissioned for it from Houbraken (many of the borders being designed by Gainsborough) and Vertue.Inscribed on the frame: Mr Rapin de Thoyras Natus 25. Mar 1661.
