Description: Portrait of John Maitland, Duke of Lauderdale (1616-182), bust directed to left but looking at the viewer, wearing a neckerchief and brocaded jacket with star of the Order of the Garter; in an ornamental oval; an owl and books below.According to the British Museum record, Maitland was a Scottish statesman; created Marquis of March 1672, Duke of Lauderdale 1673, Viscount of Petersham and Earl of Guildford 1674, member of Privy Council, Knight of Garter; exercised chiefly power in Scotland from 1660 to 1680 then fell into disgrace on accession of James II and died shortly afterwards.Inscribed on the frame: IOHN DUKE OF LAUDERDALE.Signed, dated and with the address of the publisher at bottom: In the Collection of the Right Hon the Earl of Dysert / P.
