Description: Plate LII from the III out of four volumes collection Le Antichitą Romane collecting plates by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, firstly published by Angelo Rotili in Rome between 1756 and 1757. The second edition appeared in 1784. Original wide margins, no traces of binding or folding. Single plate with illustration and explanatory text.Titled below: 'Urna di marmo col suo Coperchio ritrovata dentro al Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella nel Pontificato di Paolo III. ed in oggi esistente nel cortile del Palazzo Farnese.'Signed on the bottom right: 'Piranesi Archit. dis. ed inc.'.Translated title: Marble urn with its lid, found inside the mausoleum of Caecilia Metella during the pontificate of Paul III and now in the courtyard of the Palazzo Farnese...About mausoleum of Caecilia Metella, wife of the Triumvir Marcus Crassus, situated in the ancient Appian Way, not far from the Church of S. Sebastiano fuori delle Mura [St. Sebastian outside the Walls...]. Etching with some interventions in burin on hand laid paper, with broad margins; plate mark: 395 x 596 mm; total 558 x 803 mm; somewhat frayed end margins, a small stain on the top and left external margins, otherwise in great condition. A small tear at the bottom margin. Visible watermark.
