Description: View on Abspoel castle near Oegstgeest, North of Leiden, as it looked in 1712.The castle was built around 1336. It was set on fire in 1574 from Leiden to prevent the Spaniards to take it over. It was rebuilt round 1600. It was completely destroyed in 1863 and the site was converted into agricultural land. In front of Castle Endegeest is a weathered eighteenth-century sandstone obelisk, from the former Abspoel.Titled below: 'ABSPOEL.', signed on the bottom left: 'J. Lamsvelt fec.' Etching and engraving on paper; trimmed within plate mark and pasted down on another sheet of paper; total: 124 x 211 mm; some light staining and some smudges, otherwise in good condition.
