Title: Alexander the Great, 1690, Latin | Q. Curtii Rufi Historiarum libri, accuratissime editi, Amsterdam, ex officina Elzeviriana, 1690, 271 [16] pp.
Description: Apart from only a few minor authors, Quintus Curtius Rufus is the only Roman writer whose history of Alexander the Great has survived. His work originally consisted of ten books and was very popular in the Middle Ages (it was passed down to us through over a hundred manuscripts). Unfortunately the first two books are now lost. Rufus used Cleitarchus' History of Alexander as his primary source. This author, a contemporary of Alexander, wrote a history that focused on Alexander's presumed psychological development from a brilliant young conqueror to a paranoid despot. Readers of Rufus' history must have noticed that the same psychological development applied to their current situation: tyranny of Tiberius and Caligula.Alexander the Great - Roman - Antiquity - Rufus Half leather, 12 x 6.5 cm. Signs of wear, damaged spine. Discoloration on pastedowns and endleaves. Left outer edge of title page damaged. Clean copy.
