Author: Title: [Periodical, 1758-1760, 2 volumes] De Borger. Utrecht: Wed. J. van Schoonhoven, 1758-1760, 2 vols., VIII, 393; VIII, 405, (1) pp.
Description: Two volumes containing all 100 issues of De Borger, on the spine titled De Burger. De Borger's main goal is the improvement of our countrymen by extolling virtues and combating vices. The issues of this weekly periodical are dated from September 28, 1778 to August 21, 1780.Issue #1 expressly states that the authors wish to remain anonymous: instead, the editor-in-chief signed their contributions with the letter 'W', the first contributor with a 'T', and at a later stage the letters 'O' and 'J' were added. There has been much speculation about the identity of the contributors. The editor-in-chief, W, was often identified with Betje Wolff (1738-1804), presumably due to her last name. Although the attribution has been dismissed as incorrect years ago by Ghijsen (1954) and Buijnsters (1984), Wolff's name still erroneously appears as one of the authors of De Borger (e.g., in the STCN). Contemporary half calf binding, 22.5 x 14.1 cm. Rubbed corners, occasional stain/foxing.
