Inscription of a former owner on front endleaf (Bibliotheque van Hammeren).The original work, 'Le Sottilissime A stuzi di Bertoldo', appeared in the late sixteenth century and is considered one of the most remarkable books ever written about a jestser. During his writing process, the author - a Bolognese street musician named Guilio Cesare Croci (1550-1609) - was assisted by members of the renowned Accademia della Crusca. For a long time, 'Bertoldo' was the most popular book in Italy, narrating the adventures of a farmer named Bertoldo at the Veronese court of Alboïn, first king of the Lombards. Although written as a humoristic piece of fiction, the work is considered a particularly accurate description of the characteristics, whereabouts and experiences of a court jester.This French translation was published in The Hague and was intended for a Dutch audience.
