Description: The first mineurs dug underground corridors under fortresses in order to breach walls and ramparts (the ends of which they filled with gunpowder), allowing the infantry to attack fast. The 'mining' of fortifications was elevated to a true art during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). Gradually, as technology advanced, mineurs specialized more and more in working with explosives. Due to the great amount of skill that was needed for this dangerous job, the special unit of the sappeurs was founded. Sappeurs and mineurs now formed an inseparable couple.Numerous manuscript annotations in ink on pp. 161-167, made by Luitenant Ingenieur A. Canneman.
