Brugmans, as well as Redevoering over het Gemeenebest der Letteren by A. Siewertz van Reesema.Sebald Justinus Brugmans (1763-1819) was considered an authority in the field of medicine. He was appointed rector magnificus of Leiden University during the Napoleonic period, and used his the influence that came with his academic position to expand the hortus. When Brugmans died at the age of 56, the Hollandsche Maatschappij van Fraaije Kunsten en Wetenschappen issued a competition for a eulogy: the entries by H.C. van der Boon Mesch and A. Capadose were awarded the gold and silver medal of honor. Brugmans was buried in the Pieterskerk. His brother commissioned a funerary monument with a large bust on the tombstone.
