Description: A 1774 edition of Tooneelpoëzy by Lucretia Wilhelmina van Merken and her husband Nicolaas van Winter. Lucretia had married the widower after the death of her best friend Johanna Mühl (1718-1768). Nicolaas had proposed to Lucretia by means of a poem.After their marriage, Van Merken and Van Winter published their stage works together in two volumes titled Tooneelpoëzij (1774, 1786), although by far most of the poems are from Lucretia's hand. Lucretia van Merken was praised by her contemporaries and even dubbed “the Sappho of our century”. Engraved title pages by Reinier Vinkeles.
